Style Description
Ana Albertina Delgado utilizes a vibrant, graphic brand of folk-surrealism and psychological neofiguration to challenge institutional paradigms and examine gender roles. A foundational voice of Cuba’s vanguard Generation of the 1980s, her visual language replaces conventional realism with flattened perspectives, bold contours, and highly expressive, distorted body language. Her paintings and multimedia drawings treat the female form as an active site of self-determination, utilizing an unmodulated, explosive color palette and symbolic architecture to disrupt standard representations of domesticity and intimacy. This analytical, intensely satirical approach transforms personal vignettes into universal critiques of power, securing her legacy as a vital, transgressive force in contemporary Latin American art.
Biography & Artistic Evolution
- Academic Foundations: Born in Havana, Cuba, on April 8, 1963. She completed formal artistic training at the Academia de Artes Plásticas San Alejandro from 1979 to 1983. She pursued higher studio training at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a major in Painting in 1988. She completed specialized printmaking modules at the Taller de Serigrafía René Portocarrero from 1990 to 1991.
- Institutional Service & Parallel Disciplines: Recognized as a foundational female voice within Cuba’s historical Generation of the 1980s. She co-founded the vanguard collective Grupo Puré in 1986 alongside colleagues Lázaro Saavedra and Ciro Quintana, and actively served within the collaborative initiative Grupo Vinculación to challenge regional institutional censorship.
- Exile, Translocation & Relocations: She relocated permanently from Cuba in 1993 and moved to the United States. She established her permanent home and creative studio in Miami, Florida and subsequently in Ft. Myers, FL.
- Current Status: Operates a highly active studio practice in Florida, generating large-format acrylic works, multi-layered drawings, and complex photography series focused on social debates and environmental consciousness.
