Style Description

The artist’s late-career practice captures contemporary social realities through striking, multi-dimensional compositions, shifting from early performance and photorealism toward a highly sophisticated technical approach. His work features hyper-realistic paintings of meticulously assembled collages, created by hand-cutting, altering, and manipulating original photographs. By seamlessly rendering torn edges, tactile paper fragments, and overlapping seams on canvas, the compositions establish a masterful trompe-l’œil illusion that blurs the boundary between physical collage and fine painting. This intricate methodology serves as a conduit for intense emotional responses, provoking the audience to critically confront pressing social issues and the fragmented nature of modern information.

Biography & Artistic Evolution

Academic Foundations: Born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, in 1948. He began his initial training at the Elementary Academy of Fine Arts in Cienfuegos under Samuel Feijóo before matriculating into the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in Havana. He advanced to specialized higher studio education at Cuba’s National Art School (ENA) at Cubanacán, graduating in 1968.

Institutional Service & Parallel Disciplines: Throughout his extensive career on the island, he served in diverse leadership and structural roles within the state cultural apparatus. He acted as the Artistic Director of Cuba’s prominent Cuba en la Revolución magazine, managed projects for the Cuban Cultural Endowment (Fondo de Bienes Culturales), and served on the core organizing team for the historic First Wifredo Lam Havana Biennial in 1984. A pioneer of the Cuban screenprinting boom, he also directed the Experimental Serigraphy Workshop (Taller Experimental de Serigrafía) in Havana.

Exile, Translocation & Relocations: Navigating mounting institutional censorship, the artist executed an international translocation in 1990, relocating his creative studio to Spain where he collaborated on independent print portfolios in Madrid and Valencia. In 1995, he executed his definitive geographic relocation to the United States, settling his permanent home and workshop infrastructure in Miami, Florida.

Final Status & Legacy: In the United States, he balanced his independent painting with active roles in journalism, writing reviews for prominent art magazines and serving as an active art critic for El Nuevo Herald in Miami. He organized numerous contemporary art exhibitions across South Florida until his death on December 17, 2020. His final decades were anchored by a massive stylistic evolution, executing eye-popping hyper-realistic painted collages and pioneering augmented reality canvas works alongside his long-term partner, the artist and designer Ivonne Ferrer.
