Style Description
The artist’s practice is reminiscent of the Pattern and Decoration Movement from the late 1970s which rebelled against systemic institutional discrimination targeting minority and female creators by doubling down on the inclusion of patterning in their work. Her compositions achieve a delicate calculated balance between extreme linear complexity and minimalist structural simplicity. By layering thousands of hand-drawn ink strokes, enamel tracking sequences, and patterns onto her wall installations, she creates striking visual matrices subject to the interpretation of the viewers who may view it as a meditative spiritual exercise or as a battle of organisms. When she enhances her portraits with such intricate sequences, the work transforms into an inquiry into memory, gender, and shared resilience.
Biography & Artistic Evolution
- Academic Foundations: Born in La Víbora, Havana, Cuba, in 1951. She traveled back and forth with her family between Havana and Miami from 1953 until they permanently resettled in the United States in 1960. She subsequently pursued formal higher studio education in South Florida, earning an Associate in Arts degree with honors from Miami-Dade College in 2001, where she was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Following this achievement, she advanced to higher studio research at Florida International University, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Photography in 2006 alongside induction into Phi Beta Kappa.
- Institutional Service & Parallel Disciplines: Upon completing her higher studio training, she became an active leading voice within the South Florida contemporary art infrastructure. She was a resident-artist at Art Center South Florida on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach from 2006 to 2010 and served as an elected board member from 2007 to 2010. Her meticulous spatial command directly informed her parallel ventures into large-scale civic design, completing major public architectural art commissions including the prominent Ponce Office Tower installation in 2010.
- Exile, Translocation & Relocations: Her life is defined by a dense trajectory of international relocations across global art capitals before returning permanently to her primary diaspora hub. She lived and studied in Spain from 1972 to 1973, translocated to Caracas, Venezuela, where she operated from 1973 to 1982, and subsequently anchored her workshop in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from 1982 to 1985. In 1985, she executed her definitive geographic translocation back to Miami, Florida.
- Current Status: She currently resides and operates an active physical home studio in Miami, Florida. She remains deeply integrated into international fine art networks, executing high-profile gallery presentations and museum surveys that map her signature intricate line arrays across a global platform.
Teaching & Academic Appointments
She did not engage in teaching, but has served in advisory capacities:
- 2007–2012: Studio Workshop Lead and Fine Art Project Advisor, Art Center South Florida Community Programs, Miami Beach, FL.
- 2015–Present: Independent Painting and Photography Mentor, Contemporary Fine Art Workshop Systems, Miami, FL.
Notable Artwork Series & Motifs
- Adorned Spiritual Portraits: An expansive series that seamlessly integrates her complex, intricate line systems with figurative portraiture. The canvases achieve a profound sense of spirituality by balancing immense linear density with minimalist structural simplicity. Drawing direct historical inspiration from the foundational Pattern and Decoration Movement of the late 1970s, these highly embellished figures proudly operate as a contemporary continuation of that movement’s radical aesthetic protest against systemic institutional discrimination targeting minority and female artists.
- Formation & Fragmentation: A core portfolio of paintings and multi-dimensional works investigating cellular growth patterns, nested circular geometry, and lines that examine individual adaptation across changing environments.
- Intuitive Mark-Making Array: A signature graphic drawing sequence relying on thousands of micro-detailed ink strokes and enamel lines layered systematically onto paper and structural wood panels.
- Meditations in Light & Glass: An ongoing series utilizing transparency, ink layers, and glass circles to construct structural abstract mandalas that address universal cosmic scales and existential time.
