Style Description

Luis Cabrera Hernández’s body of work is fundamentally based on a highly sophisticated use of collage, printmaking, and fine graphic lines, all infused with a delicate, sharp sense of humor rooted in his Cuban heritage. His compositions act as complex “mental collages” that remix historical art references, classical figures, and pop iconography across contemporary planes. Seamlessly blending lithography, xylography, and drawing, Cabrera subverts traditional stylistic boundaries and architectural hierarchies. By filtering serious structural histories through parody, visual satire, and meticulous print craftsmanship, his works build an inventive, rebellious dialogue that challenges how we view traditional culture and institutional memory.

Biography & Artistic Evolution

Academic Foundations: Born in Havana, Cuba, on May 30, 1956. He pursued his foundational fine arts training at the Academia de Artes Plásticas San Alejandro from 1970 to 1973, followed by advanced studio studies at the National School of Art (ENA). He completed his higher university education at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana, graduating with a specialization in Engraving in 1982. He subsequently completed advanced postgraduate studies at the Higher Institute for Graphics and Book Art in Leipzig, Germany, in 1985.

Institutional Service & Parallel Disciplines: His fine arts practice is deeply informed by an extensive parallel track in academic leadership, high-level printmaking production, and publishing. He began working in graphic humor in 1969, publishing illustrations for the satirical weekly Palante. Following his university graduation, he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Engraving Department at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), teaching university-level fine printmaking from 1982 to 1993. During this identical timeframe, he balanced his academic tenure with active production service as a master printmaker within Havana’s historic Taller Experimental de Gráfica and the Taller de Serigrafía Artística “René Portocarrero”.

Exile, Translocation & Relocations: He translocated permanently from Cuba to Europe in 1993, establishing his permanent residence and fine art print workshop in Madrid, Spain. Upon settling in Spain, he expanded his professional practice into commercial media illustration, collaborating as a book, newspaper, and magazine illustrator for major national print publications and editorial houses across Spain.

Current Status: He permanently resides and works in Madrid, Spain. He serves as a long-term Professor of Lithography and Xylography at the prestigious School of Engraving and Graphic Design within the Real Casa de la Moneda (Royal Mint House), maintaining an active international studio practice and mentorship role.
