Artist dossier

Jose Marquez Valdez

Born 1961, Havana, Cuba — Resident of Miami, Florida since 2017

Style Description

The artist’s practice investigates the intersection of urban architectural infrastructure and formal spatial deconstruction, utilizing a rigorous approach to precise draftsmanship and acrylics on canvas. Through a deliberate deployment of dense cityscapes and structural perspectives, the work moves past mere topographical illustration to critically examine how built environments record systemic displacement. The composition relies on high-precision linear boundaries and calculated spatial projections, forcing an intellectual dialogue between material constraints and the shifting borders of the modern diaspora. Ultimately, the psychological intent manifests as a formal critique of human resilience operating within complex, authoritarian, or translocated urban frameworks.

Biography & Artistic Evolution

Academic Foundations: Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1961. He completed his intermediate studio studies at the San Alejandro National Art Academy, graduating in 1982. Following this achievement, he advanced to higher studio education at the elite Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana, graduating with a specialization in Painting and Graphic Arts in 1988.

Institutional Service & Parallel Disciplines: Upon completing his higher education, he entered Cuba's professional fine arts tier, balancing a prolific independent studio career with influential pedagogical roles. He served as a Professor of Drawing and Painting at the San Alejandro National Art Academy, an institutional career that directly shaped the analytical drafting precision and complex spatial design of his contemporary landscape work.

Exile, Translocation & Relocations: Navigating mounting systemic restrictions on the island, he executed a major international relocation in 2000, moving to Western Europe. He spent a significant seventeen-year developmental chapter living and exhibiting extensively throughout Spain. In late 2017, he made his definitive geographic translocation to the United States, permanently establishing his home and creative workshop within the prominent diaspora hub of Miami, Florida.

Current Status: He currently operates an active physical home studio in Miami, Florida. He remains deeply connected to transnational contemporary networks, utilizing his transatlantic working history to explore the evolving cultural, social, and architectural intersections between Cuba, Spain, and the United States.

Teaching & Academic Appointments

1988–1999: Professor of Drawing and Painting, Fine Arts Department, San Alejandro National Art Academy (Academia San Alejandro), Havana, Cuba.

2002–2015: Visiting Lecturer and Independent Studio Master, Contemporary Landscape and Fine Art Workshops, Madrid/Valencia, Spain.

Notable Artwork Series & Motifs

Deconstructed Coordinates & Urban Grids: A prominent portfolio of compositions focusing on architectural perspectives and compressed municipal frameworks. This series breaks away from standard topographical layout designs, instead dismantling real physical lines to expose inner psychological structures and feelings of containment.

The Spliced Shoreline (Cultural Syncretism): An ongoing visual investigation capturing the architectural boundaries where island structures and metropolitan landscapes collide. These crowded layouts pair recognizable features from Havana streets with abstract universal patterns, functioning as a visual document of bicultural identity.

Emigré Crossings & Spatial Solitude: A sequence of unpopulated architectural street scenes exploring the void created by forced translocation. The works co-opt strict drafting precision and calculated shadow projections to track how complex environments echo the heavy isolation of the modern diaspora experience.
