Style Description

Antonio Guerrero bridges Cuban history with a broader planetary consciousness through appropriated classical European figurative traditions and contemporary historical iconography. His large-format mixed-media work reprocesses familiar cultural symbols, archetypes, and historical figures through surreal symbolism and recognizable figuration, engaging themes of translocation, freedom, and survival.

Biography & Artistic Evolution
  • Academic Foundations: Born in Matanzas, Cuba, in 1968. He developed his skills autodidactically in an art-focused household rather than through formal institutional art-school training.
  • Institutional Service & Parallel Disciplines: Drafted into the Cuban military in 1986, he served in Ethiopia until 1988. After returning to Cuba, he worked as an artisan and developed skills in woodcarving, metal engraving, and commercial sculpture.
  • Exile, Translocation & Relocations: On March 31, 1992, Guerrero escaped from the Matanzas coast by raft with his cousin and a close friend. After five days at sea they were rescued. He initially lived with family in Hialeah before establishing his permanent studio.
  • Current Status: He resides and works from his home studio in Miami Beach, Florida, and maintains an active international practice.
